Why small contractors never see the recompete coming
The notice was up for 15 days and nobody at the firm saw it. Here is how a bid desk keeps that from happening.

The notice was up on SAM.gov for 15 days. Nobody at the firm saw it. The incumbent’s contract was recompeted and awarded, and the first anyone heard was the award notice. It happens to small contractors every month, and it is the most expensive miss there is, because a recompete is the one bid where you already know the buyer. Deltek counts a 49% decline since FY2010 in the number of small businesses participating in the federal market. Missed recompetes are how a lot of them left.
SAM.gov does not come to you
Saved searches help, but they are only as good as the NAICS codes and keywords behind them, and most firms set them up once and never revisit. A notice posted under a neighbouring code, or a sources-sought that precedes the solicitation by months, slides past.
A recompete is the one bid where you already know the buyer. It should never be a surprise.
“The number of women-owned small firms dropped in 2025 to 11,648, a decrease of 936 companies leaving the federal market.”
Federal News Network, on the SBA FY2025 scorecard, June 2026
Firms do not leave because they lost one bid. They leave because the contract they were counting on came up for recompete and nobody saw it.
Nobody owns the screening
At a small firm, bid screening is a side task for the owner or the office manager. It gets done when there is time, and there is never time during the two weeks that matter.
What a bid desk does differently
- Screens every active notice in your NAICS codes and states, daily, and scores each one bid / no-bid
- Keeps a recompete calendar for every contract you hold, so the next solicitation is expected months ahead
- Reviews what you won and what you lost, twice a month, and lists the opportunities that went by unseen
- Delivers five audited bid responses a month, each with a page-by-page audit before you sign
