What the spreadsheet gets wrong about equipment finance pricing
Every sales team prices deals in a spreadsheet somebody built years ago. Here is where it quietly costs you money.

Every equipment finance sales team has one: the pricing workbook somebody built years ago, copied from rep to rep, with a tab nobody is allowed to touch. It works, mostly. The places where it does not are where the money goes, and there is more money moving through it than ever: ELFA reported new business volume of $11.8 billion in August 2026, down from July’s all-time high of $14.3 billion and up 19.1% on the year.
Every rep has a slightly different copy
A workbook gets emailed, saved to a desktop, and tweaked. One rep rounds the rate factor. Another has an old cost of funds. Two quotes for the same customer on the same equipment come back with different payments, and the customer notices before you do.
The spreadsheet is not wrong. It is wrong in twelve different ways on twelve different laptops.
“The industry-wide average fell 2.0 percentage points to 75.4% in August, its lowest level since February 2025.”
ELFA CapEx Finance Index, on credit approval rates, August 2026
When one deal in four is getting declined, the quote that goes out has to be right the first time. A rep cannot afford to re-price after the customer has already been told a number.
Goal seek is a manual loop
The customer needs a payment under a number. The rep changes points, rereads the payment, changes points again. Five minutes per deal, and a reserve left on the table whenever the rep stops one step early. Solving for the points or the buy rate that hits a target payment, customer rate or commission should be one step, not a loop.
Interim rent and advance payments get skipped
They are the fiddly cells, so under pressure they get zeroed out. The quote goes out light, and the correction comes at funding, after the customer has a number in their head.
“2026 has been a solid year for new business volume and Q4 looks to be on track to finish the year strong.”
Executive respondent, ELFA Monthly Confidence Index, October 2026
Nothing gets logged
A quote that lives in a workbook on a laptop is not in anyone’s pipeline. Leaders cannot see funded volume, yield or commission across the team without asking each rep to send a file.
What to look for instead
- One pricing engine, matched to the penny against the deals you already funded
- Goal seek on points or buy rate, applied to the deal in one tap
- EFA, TRAC, FMV and $1 buyout structures set up the way your team sells them
- A quote PDF with your company name on it, sent from a phone on the lot
- A deal log the whole team shares, with pipeline and funded totals
